Nuclear Fusion Reactor Remote Handling Robot

A tokamak is a device designed to confine extremely hot plasma using magnetic fields to create an environment where nuclear fusion reactions can occur, similar to the Sun. To confine the plasma, D-shaped superconducting magnets generate a magnetic field, allowing the plasma to be controlled and maintained in a stable state within a doughnut-shaped vacuum chamber.

At the request of the Korea Institute of Fusion Energy (KFE), we are currently designing and developing a robotic system for the maintenance of Korea's next-generation fusion reactor. This robot is being developed to inspect and service surface components inside the tokamak. To ensure mobility in the tokamak's extreme environment—characterized by high temperatures and ultra-high vacuum—the robot is designed with a snake-like, segmented structure over 6 meters in length and is constructed from ultra-lightweight materials, keeping the total weight under 25 kg to prevent contamination.

As global efforts to accelerate the realization of nuclear fusion continue, the potential for industrial expansion in the fusion sector is increasing. This project, aimed at leading the localization and technological advancement of fusion maintenance systems, focuses on designing a robotic system for tokamak maintenance. It is expected to serve as a foundation for developing a viable business model in the fusion reactor maintenance industry.
